The Best Location for a Hanging Bird Feeder
To ensure the safety of birds, whilst also thinking about the best location for viewing, there are some key things to consider when placing your hanging feeder.
Place your bird feeder in an open area where birds can easily spot it. Birds are more likely to find and use feeders that are placed in clear, unobstructed locations. But don't forget about yourself, if you can, position the feeder where you can enjoy watching the birds, such as near a window or a seating area in your garden.
While it’s important for the feeder to be visible, it should also be near natural cover like trees or shrubs. This provides birds with a quick escape route from predators such as cats and hawks.
Hang the feeder at a height that’s safe from ground predators. Typically, placing the feeder 5-6 feet off the ground works well to deter cats and other ground-based threats.
Birds need water for drinking and bathing. Placing your feeder near a bird bath can make your yard even more attractive to them. Ensure that the water source is clean and fresh.
What Garden Birds will I attract?
Depending on the type of hanging feeders you provide, you will attract a range of smaller and bigger garden birds into your outdoor space.
If you opt for a hanging tube feeder filled with sunflower hearts, expect a wild bird like Blue Tits and Finches, to perch on this hanging feeder.
Hopper hanging feeders loaded with mixed seeds can attract larger birds such as cardinals and grosbeaks.
When choosing a feeder, make sure you know the birds in your local area and their preferred feeding methods and choose the feeder that best suits them.
