Benefits of Providing Wren Nest Boxes

Five studies from around the world have shown that in areas with nest boxes, the populations of bird species has grown which shows the importance of installing a nest box, especially for birds such as Wrens who are orange on the UK conservation status list.

    Do Wrens use Nest Boxes?

Yes, Wrens will regularly use nest boxes that are suitable for nesting and raising their young.

Where to place a Wren House UK

In the UK, it's best to put a Wren nest box in a spot that mimics the natural habitat of the species.

Wrens prefer nesting near dense vegetation as this helps to provide protection and cover for the birds. The box should be mounted at a height of 1.5 to 3 metres above the ground to remain easily accessible for Wrens.

Position the entrance of the box away from winds and direct sunlight.

    Do Wren Boxes Need Cleaning?

Yes, clean Wren nest boxes help to encourage these birds to come back to the nest in the nest breeding seasons.

They are fairly low maintenance and easy to clean, all you need to do is remove any old nesting materials and use warm water to rinse. Before reinstalling, let it completely air dry before reinstalling.

How to Attract Wrens to a Nest Box?

The location of the nest box is so important because Wrens feel safe when they have areas of cover near by, so if they need to they can retreat to safety. Areas with plenty of bushes and trees are perfect.

It's also important to provide a food source that the birds can rely on. A bird feeder with mealworms and other insects is always a way to a Wrens heart! If you can, put out a bird bath with shallow water in it, so that the Wrens can drink and bathe.

This bird box may also attract other species such as the Spotted Flycatchers and Robins.
