For all insect eating birds, mealworms are a source of high energy and nutrition and they are a important to keeping garden birds healthy. By having a mealworm feeder in your garden, you are giving the local birds an easy way to access this part of their diet.
It is also really important because mealworms are so full of energy, and in a mealworm feeder they are of easy access to the birds allowing the small and larger birds to save energy and stock up on this energy for activities such as nesting, breeding and during the colder months.
Mealworms can be provided all year round, and if you consistently put them out for the wild bird in your garden, you will encourage them to keep coming back.
A lot of our feathered friends are attracted to mealworm feeders as they are such a delicious and nutritious form of food.
The most well known wild birds that are fans of mealworms are small birds such as Blue birds, Robins, Chickadees, Nuthatches.
A mealworm feeder should be located near tree and bushes. The natural cover the vegetation provides will make the birds feel safer and allow them to hide if they feel under any threat.
If possible, position the ground feeder at a height that ground predators, such as cats, cannot access the feeder whilst birds are feeding. Typically, around 5 to 6 feet above the ground is suitable.
Birds enjoy feeding in spaces that are quiet and undisturbed which is why it is important to place the feeder in an area where it won't be disturbed too much.
